Thien Kee Steamboat Review

Many people think that all the well known restaurants in Singapore are in prime location and are easy to locate. But, in the Golden Mile Tower basement, in between the dodgy KTV lounges and bars, antique shops, and oddly, a debt collector company, sits a popular Steamboat and chicken rice stall that is always packed on weekends. My family and I reached there at about 8, and we were lucky to get a table near the meats counter.

The Menu here is pretty diverse, and most of the regulars here already know what to order. They have the steamboat with various classic ingredients of vegetables, fish and meat. There is Steamed Chicken and roast pork, chicken rice, chinese satay and Hainanese Pork Chop. Diverse huh???

A plate of ingredients like that should cost about $15, and it would be a mixture of stuff like fishballs and prawns, you know, usual stuff…

The plate of fish also cost about the same, it was not overly small or big pieces, so with a bit of care, it shouldn’t be overcooked or undercooked.

I understand that the different tiers of the steamboat prices are $30, $40 and $50, and then you can order extra ingredients if you want.

The satay was pork, and as compared to other satays I eat on a regular basis at Alexandra Food Centre and Newton Food Centre (which both has really good satay), I would consider it to be above average and a little chewy…

The Hainanese Pork Chop ($11) was just ok in my mind, the Pork Chop was more hard than crispy and the tomato sauce was on the sweeter side…

And, of course the Steamed Chicken which comes with Chicken Rice (of course, duh)! Now, no matter what stall the chicken rice i eat from, I am very critical of the dish down to the finest detail about the ‘al-denteness’ of the rice. The chicken was succulent and tender enough, but it didn’t blow my mind. The rice they used was not of high quality and was slight overcooked. But, it did have a strong background of Chicken taste which I liked…

In conclusion, from what I have tasted, I can see why this restaurant has a long history in the business and a great anount of regulars. However, it wasn’t the best Steamboat or best Chicken Rice i ever tasted. But, if you are in the mood for both Steamboat and Chicken rice and a reasonable price, I don’t see any reason not to pop down to the favoured hangout area of the Thais in Singapore to get your fix! Besides, it is onr of the few remaining restaurants like this that can give locals a good satisfying feeling in their stomach…. Dont know what I mean, try it yourself then…
